Out-tasking report from Compupacific Europe

Out-tasking report from Compupacific Europe analyzes benefits of 'small bites'

LIVERPOOL, United Kingdom -- Dec. 19, 2009 -- In a new research report, three international business specialists explore "out-tasking" as a flexible, cost-effective alternative or complement to traditional outsourcing agreements.

They describe a selective approach to external partnerships for business process or IT functions, characterized as taking "one bite at a time." This strategy is gaining wider attention "as a way of quickly realising cost-savings or efficiencies in today's uncertain economic environment," the authors explain.

The 14-page white paper, "Outsourcing vs. Out-Tasking: Practical Advice," was commissioned and distributed by CompuPacific Europe, a division of a Top 100 global business solution provider based in China.

Jon Aries, managing director of CompuPacific Europe, and his two independent co-writers present the rewards of step-by-step tactics: "Instead of divesting their back-office functions as a whole, companies’ contract out in an incremental and manageable way. Out-tasking helps cut costs quickly without loss of control or high set-up costs."

Data entry, claim processing, other document-based services, animation packages and CAD conversion are among operations suited for out-tasking.

Selecting small, manageable projects for third-party support involves far shorter planning cycles and much quicker benefits -- usually seen within six months. Executives can "take the most painful parts of their business and deal with them individually and specifically, rather than making a monumental leap of faith" by transferring complete functions, says the report.

What's not different is that "out-tasking also invariably leans to offshore providers, as cost reduction is normally a key driver." Though savings typically are more modest with out-tasking, the paper says they are easier to define and measure.

A new wave of out-tasking services generally are provided by small, specialized partners such as CompuPacific. Clients include small and medium-sized enterprises unable to outsource extensive work, to underwrite high up-front costs or to absorb the disruption often associated with traditional outsourcing deals.

In addition to Aries, the white paper authors are management consultant Roger Davies and attorney Peter Brudenall, a partner in the technology and outsourcing practice at Hunton & Williams law firm in London.
